this is my first blog post and my best impression of an angsty teenage blogger.
I thought I would address what the purpose of this assignment was. It was to compare reality and the realists. I took the very exciting but highly unrealistic, romanticized show, CSI. Then i compared it to the more documentary-like show, The First 48. CSI. I grew up watching that show. I watched characters come and go, people died, they solved crimes, and basically left no case unsolved. I have to admit I wouldn’t watch the show if there wasn’t insight into the characters personal lives. I could take you through all 12 something seasons but that would take FAR too long. This show has an unrealistically attractive cast, and a very unrealistic portrayal of the job. Grissom, Willows, and Stokes; those were the three main characters from the show. Grissom being the lead man, solitary, and highly complex. He reminds me of Dumbledore, or Atticus Finch, in the sense that he is like the voice of reason. Catherine Willows, alongside Sara, Grissom’s love interest, she is one of the only female field investigators. She has a complicated home life, trying to balance her job, and a daughter. and of course Nick! The fun loving guy, who always makes everyone smile. This is like, typical TV drama cast. The troubled humans, the strange plot twists, love stories thrown in every once in awhile, and of course they always find the killer. No matter how outlandish, or crazy the murder may be, they always seemingly figure it out within a few days. IN CONTRAST TO THE FIRST 48. The show even opens with the statistic, “If the authorities can’t find any leads within the first 48 hours, the chances of them catching the killer are cut in half.” real talk. And another aspect that is very real in this, is the forensic investigative aspect. Usually, the evidence is scarce or contaminated or invalid. These people typically rely on witnesses, and family of the deceased. Personally, I don’t mind watching both. I don’t prefer one over the other. I like the realistic take The First 48 gives me, but the teenage girl in me likes looking at the attractive cast of CSI, and I like following the characters personal lives. In essence, CSI is very unrealistic as far as catching the bad guy by finding his hairs on a chair, but realistic regionally. Las Vegas is a high crime area. The First 48 is realistic, because they don’t sugar coat anything, and they tell it like it is.
